What kind of warranties do waterproofing companies offer?

If you’re thinking about waterproofing your crawlspace or basement, you’ve probably heard this before: “Don’t worry—it comes with a lifetime warranty.”

Sounds great, right? But hold up—not all warranties are created equal.

We’ve seen too many shady warranties. Here’s our unfiltered rant—don’t get fooled!

Before you sign the dotted line, let’s break down the types of waterproofing warranties out there, what they actually mean, and how to protect yourself from getting stuck with a useless promise.

The Most Common Waterproofing Warranties

1. Lifetime Warranty

  • What it is: A guarantee that the waterproofing system will perform for the life of the home.
  • What to ask:
    • Is this transferable to a future buyer?
    • Does it cover labor or just materials?
    • Is the company likely to still be around in 20 years?

A good lifetime warranty covers both labor and materials—and stays with the home if you sell.

2. Limited Warranty

  • What it is: Covers specific parts of the system (or labor) for a set time—often 10, 15, or 25 years.
  • Good for: French drains, vapor barriers, sump pumps, or partial systems.

These are more realistic for products that naturally wear over time—but still useful when they’re clear and fair.

3. System-Specific or Manufacturer Warranties

  • Examples:
    • Sump pump: 3–5 years
    • Dehumidifier: 5 years
    • Encapsulation liner: 20+ years

Know what’s covered under the manufacturer’s warranty vs. what the installer guarantees. Sometimes they’re separate.

4. Workmanship Warranty

  • Covers: Labor and installation—basically, how well the work was done.
  • Typical length: 1–5 years
  • Why it matters: Even the best materials won’t hold up if they’re installed wrong.

A solid company stands behind its crew, not just the parts.

Watch Out for These Warranty Red Flags

We hate seeing homeowners get taken advantage of. So here’s what to look out for:

“Lifetime”… with a Catch

Some warranties say “lifetime” but:

  • Only apply if you do paid maintenance every year
  • Don’t cover labor, just parts (which are cheap compared to service)
  • Void if anything else is installed in the space

Always read the fine print—and get it in writing.

“Transferable” Warranties That Aren’t

Many warranties only transfer once, or only within a short window after the sale of a home. If you’re buying or selling a home, ask about this—it’s often a selling point, but only if it’s legit.

Companies That Vanish

A warranty is only as good as the company offering it. If they go out of business, your “lifetime coverage” disappears. Look for companies with solid reputations, real reviews, and long track records. If the price seems too good to be true, the warranty probably is too.

What to Look for in a Waterproofing Warranty

Written documentation—no verbal promises
Clear coverage—what’s included (and what’s not)
Transfer terms—especially if you plan to sell
Labor + material—not just product replacement
Company stability—check reviews, licenses, and how long they’ve been around

At Better Basements & Waterproofing, we believe a warranty should do what it says: protect your home and give you peace of mind. That’s why we offer:

  • Transferable warranties on most full waterproofing systems
  • Clear documentation (no fine-print traps)
  • Real humans who explain what’s covered—and what’s not
  • No shady upsells or maintenance fees to “keep it active”

We’ve seen too many homeowners get burned by vague or empty promises—and we’re here to do things differently.

A waterproofing warranty should make you feel confident—not confused.

So ask questions. Read the paperwork. And don’t be afraid to walk away from a company that can’t explain its warranty in plain English.
