Basement Stairwell Drain Clogged? 5 Honest Fixes That Work

A basement stairwell drain clogged with leaves can flood a basement in a single storm. If your home has outside concrete stairs leading down to a basement door, the small drain at the bottom of those stairs is the only thing keeping rain from piling up against that door.

Here is the short answer. Outside basement stairs collect rain and runoff from the yard, the steps, and sometimes the roof. A drain at the bottom carries that water away. When the drain clogs, the stairwell fills like a bucket, and water pours in under the door. Keeping the drain clear, protecting it from debris, and making sure it actually drains somewhere are the fixes that matter.

I am Dylan with Better Basements & Waterproofing. We find and fix basement water problems throughout Portland, Eugene, and Vancouver, where many older homes have exterior basement stairwells. Here is how to keep yours from becoming the way water gets in.

How a Basement Stairwell Drain Works

An exterior basement stairwell is open to the sky. Every inch of rain that falls into it, plus any runoff from the surrounding yard, ends up at the bottom step.

The drain at the bottom is supposed to carry that water away. Depending on the home, it may connect to the foundation drain, a sump pump, a drywell, or another drainage line. If it is working, water never reaches the threshold of the basement door.

Experienced building pros on Green Building Advisor warn that a plugged door-well drain usually means a flooded basement, and recommend connecting it to a properly sized catch basin rather than a basic floor drain.

Why You End Up With a Basement Stairwell Drain Clogged

Fall leaves. Wind blows leaves into the stairwell and they collect right over the drain. A few wet leaves can seal it, which is why a basement stairwell drain clogged in November is so common in leafy Portland neighborhoods.

Dirt and silt. Runoff from the yard carries soil down the steps.

Roots. Like any buried pipe, the line from the drain can be invaded by roots.

A failed or collapsed line. Older drain lines can crack, sag, or separate underground.

No real outlet. Some stairwell drains were never connected to anything that can handle a storm. They empty into a small pocket of gravel that fills up in clay soil.

Signs of a Basement Stairwell Drain Clogged With Debris

  • Water stands at the bottom of the stairs after rain.
  • The water drains away slowly, hours after the storm ends.
  • You see water stains, rust, or rot at the bottom of the basement door or its frame.
  • Carpet or flooring just inside the door gets wet after heavy rain.

5 Honest Fixes for a Basement Stairwell Drain Clogged With Debris

Fix 1: Clear it now, and check it all season. Remove leaves and debris from the grate and the opening. In the fall, check it after every windy storm. A basement stairwell drain clogged with a few leaves is a quick fix if you catch it before the next storm.

Fix 2: Add a domed or raised strainer. A raised grate lets water in around the sides even when leaves pile up on top.

Fix 3: Flush and snake the line. Run a garden hose into the drain. If the water backs up, the line beyond the grate is blocked. A drain snake can clear many clogs. Roots or packed sediment may need professional equipment.

Fix 4: Keep extra water out of the stairwell. Make sure gutters above the stairwell are clean and that no downspout empties into it. Slope the ground at the top of the stairs away from the opening. A cover or small roof over the stairwell keeps rain out entirely.

Fix 5: Make sure the drain goes somewhere that works. If the line is broken, undersized, or empties into a gravel pocket that fills in clay soil, clearing it will not hold for long. Tying the drain into a drainage system or sump pump may be the lasting fix.

What to Do If Water Is Already at the Door

  • Clear the grate by hand if you can do it safely.
  • Move valuables and rugs away from the inside of the door.
  • Use a wet vacuum or a small utility pump to lower the water in the stairwell.

Once the storm passes, find out why you had a basement stairwell drain clogged in the first place, before the next storm.

When It Is Not Just the Stairwell Drain

A basement stairwell drain clogged with leaves is not always the whole story. Water can also come through the foundation walls beside the stairs, the joint where the stairwell slab meets the house, or the door threshold itself. If water keeps appearing after the drain is clear, it may be coming in somewhere else. Read how to tell if water is coming through your basement walls or floor.

Frequently Asked Questions About a Basement Stairwell Drain That Is Clogged

Why is water coming in under my basement door when it rains?

The most common cause is a clogged or overwhelmed drain at the bottom of the outside stairs. Water fills the stairwell and runs under the door.

How do I unclog a basement stairwell drain?

Clear the grate, then flush the line with a hose or use a drain snake. Roots and collapsed lines usually need a professional.

Should my basement stairwell drain connect to a sump pump?

In many homes, connecting it to a drainage system or sump pump gives the water a reliable place to go, especially in clay soil.

Can I cover my outside basement stairs?

Yes. A stairwell cover or roof keeps rain out, which greatly reduces the load on the drain.

These folks are awesome to work with. Hyper punctual, knowledgeable, and flexible. Not pushy at all and seem to simply want your water problems to go away. I don’t feel their techs would offer or recommend doing anything they wouldn’t do to their own homes.
