Contractor Q&A: Common waterproofing myths debunked

When it comes to keeping your home dry, there is a lot of misinformation out there. Following the wrong advice can lead to expensive mistakes and a basement that is still wet after the next big storm.

At Better Basements and Waterproofing, we want our customers to have the facts. We are sitting down to debunk the most common myths we hear in the field so you can make the best decision for your home.

Table of Contents

  1. Myth 1: Waterproof Paint is a Permanent Fix
  2. Myth 2: My Home is New So it Wont Leak
  3. Myth 3: Exterior Waterproofing is Always Better
  4. Myth 4: It is Only a Problem When it Rains

1. Myth 1: Waterproof Paint is a Permanent Fix

Many homeowners hope a thick coat of “waterproofing” paint will solve their problems. Unfortunately, this is usually just a temporary bandage.

  • The Reality Paint sits on the surface of the wall. If water pressure is building up outside your foundation, it will eventually cause that paint to bubble, peel, and flake off.
  • The Fix You have to address the water pressure itself through proper drainage, not just hide it with a brush.

2. Myth 2: My Home is New So it Wont Leak

It is a common belief that foundation issues only happen to old houses. In reality, new homes are often more at risk during the first few years.

  • The Reality The soil around a newly built home is loose because it was recently excavated. This loose soil absorbs more water, which puts immediate pressure on a brand-new foundation.
  • The Fix Ensuring your gutters and grading are perfect from day one is essential for new constructions.

3. Myth 3: Exterior Waterproofing is Always Better

Some contractors claim the only way to fix a basement is to dig up your entire yard. While exterior work has its place, it isn’t always the “best” or most cost-effective option.

  • The Reality Interior drainage systems are often more reliable because they manage hydrostatic pressure from beneath the floor, which exterior membranes cannot always reach.
  • The Fix A combination of interior drainage and a high-quality sump pump is often the most durable solution for North Carolina homes.

4. Myth 4: It is Only a Problem When it Rains

If your basement only gets damp during a hurricane, you might think you can ignore it the rest of the year.

  • The Reality Moisture is a silent worker. Even if you don’t see standing water, high humidity levels are constantly feeding mold and rotting wooden floor joists.
  • The Fix A consistent waterproofing strategy keeps your home healthy 365 days a year, not just during a downpour.

These folks are awesome to work with. Hyper punctual, knowledgeable, and flexible. Not pushy at all and seem to simply want your water problems to go away. I don’t feel their techs would offer or recommend doing anything they wouldn’t do to their own homes.

These guys are pros. They replaced old vapor barrier and insulation in the crawl space and installed a sump pump and fan for our house. Everything was done in a timely matter and looked great. I can now sleep with peace of mind. Would definitely recommend to anyone needing work done beneath their home.
