Do I need a vapor barrier if I have a dehumidifier?

So, you’ve got a dehumidifier chugging away in your crawl space like a little moisture-fighting machine on a mission. And now you’re thinking, “Do I really need a vapor barrier too, or is this little guy doing all the heavy lifting?”

Great question. And the short answer? Yep. You probably still need a vapor barrier.

Let’s break it down for you.

Dehumidifier vs. Vapor Barrier: What’s the Difference?

A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air.
A vapor barrier stops moisture from getting into the air in the first place.

Big difference. One is damage control. The other is prevention. And when it comes to moisture and your home, prevention is way cheaper (and less moldy).

So Why Isn’t a Dehumidifier Enough?

Glad you asked. Dehumidifiers are great, don’t get us wrong. But relying on one alone is like bailing out a leaky boat with a cup and ignoring the gaping hole in the bottom.

Here’s what a vapor barrier does that your dehumidifier can’t:

  • Blocks moisture from the ground: Crawl spaces and basements pull in moisture from the soil. Vapor barriers stop that at the source.
  • Reduces how hard your dehumidifier works: Less moisture getting in = less work for the machine = longer life and lower energy bills.
  • Helps prevent mold, rot, and rust: Dehumidifiers treat symptoms. Vapor barriers stop the cause.
  • Keeps insulation dry: Wet insulation = useless insulation. A vapor barrier helps keep it in fighting shape.

Can I Use Both?

You absolutely can—and should, in many cases. Think of it like tag-team moisture control. The vapor barrier blocks most of the incoming moisture, and the dehumidifier grabs whatever sneaks by. Together, they’re basically the Batman and Robin of crawl space defense.

When You Really Need Both:

  • You live in a humid climate
  • Your crawl space smells like a swamp
  • You’ve already had mold issues
  • Your floors feel damp or your energy bill is sky-high
  • You want your home to stop feeling like a forgotten rainforest exhibit

A dehumidifier is a great tool. But it’s not a reason to skip the vapor barrier. One controls humidity; the other prevents it. They’re better together, and your home will thank you (by not smelling musty or growing science projects under your floorboards).

Not sure if your setup is working like it should? We’ll crawl under there so you don’t have to—vapor barrier, dehumidifier, or both—we’ll tell you what makes sense, no pressure, no upsells, no nonsense.

These folks are awesome to work with. Hyper punctual, knowledgeable, and flexible. Not pushy at all and seem to simply want your water problems to go away. I don’t feel their techs would offer or recommend doing anything they wouldn’t do to their own homes.

These guys are pros. They replaced old vapor barrier and insulation in the crawl space and installed a sump pump and fan for our house. Everything was done in a timely matter and looked great. I can now sleep with peace of mind. Would definitely recommend to anyone needing work done beneath their home.
