What Damage Can a Flooded Crawl Space Cause?

Oh, you thought that little pool of water under your house was no big deal? Cute. Let’s talk about the damage neglecting a flooded crawl space can cause. This information is not only good to know but necessary for every homeowner to know how to protect their home. We’ll even talk about some signs to look out for. Let’s dive into what damage a flooded crawl space cause.

Mold and Mildew

If you love the idea of your home smelling like an old gym bag, then by all means, keep ignoring that crawl space! A flooded crawl space is prime space for mold and mildew to grow, which can trigger allergies and asthma. Mold spores can easily circulate through your air, leading to both health and home issues. And that’s just the start of the damage a flooded crawl space can cause.

Signs to look out for: Musty odors in your home, discolored patches on walls or floors, and increased allergy symptoms.

Structural Damage

Wood and water = a recipe for rot. That standing water isn’t just chilling—it’s slowly breaking down your home’s foundation and wooden supports. This can also lead to uneven floors, foundation cracks, and expensive repairs. Surely that’s the worst of it, right? Think again. Curious about what other damage a flooded crawl space can cause? Keep reading.

Signs to look out for: Sagging floors, cracks in walls, ceilings, or the foundation, and doors or windows that no longer close properly.

Pest Infestation

Guess who loves a damp crawl space? Every creepy-crawly creature you’d rather keep far away from your home. From termites to rodents, a flooded crawl space is basically a new home for pests. If left unchecked, they can be a nightmare to deal with. This is yet another example of the damage a flooded crawl space can cause when ignored.

Signs to look out for: Droppings, strange noises in walls, and chewed insulation or wiring.

Electrical Hazards

Got wires or outlets near your crawl space? Great—now you’ve got water and electricity in dangerously close quarters. This combination is a recipe for disaster, with the potential for electrical shorts, power outages, or even fires. And let’s not forget the serious risk of electrocution for anyone working nearby. Shockingly bad things could happen—literally. It’s just one more example of the serious damage a flooded crawl space can cause.

Signs to look out for: Flickering lights, frequent circuit breaker trips, or visible water near electrical components.

Rising Energy Bills

Water in your crawl space can damage your insulation, making your home less energy-efficient. So, while your house slowly rots, your wallet gets drained too. Sounds like fun, right? But it’s a real issue! Check out this case study of a home with soaked insulation that we replaced—solving their problems for good. Need more reasons to worry about the damage a flooded crawl space can cause? No? Didn’t think so.

Signs to look out for: Unexpected spikes in energy bills, drafty rooms, or cold floors.

So, go ahead, be a hero—address the problem before it turns into a full-blown disaster. Or don’t. Your choice. These folks are awesome to work with. Hyper punctual, knowledgeable, and flexible. Not pushy at all and seem to simply want your water problems to go away. I don’t feel their techs would offer or recommend doing anything they wouldn’t do to their own homes.

These guys are pros. They replaced old vapor barrier and insulation in the crawl space and installed a sump pump and fan for our house. Everything was done in a timely matter and looked great. I can now sleep with peace of mind. Would definitely recommend to anyone needing work done beneath their home.
